לפי "זמרשת": נדפס לראשונה בכרך ב' של "ספר השירים" של אידלזון (1922). אידלזון זיהה את הלחן כחסידי (לא ב"ספר השירים" אלא ב"ספר שירת ישראל" - המהדורה הראשונה היא משנת 1929, אך בידינו רק מהדורה מאוחרת). ואכן הושר בחסידויות בעיקר בהונגריה, לאו דווקא במילים אלה. השיר נקלט בתנועות נוער לא רק דתיות, והושר באירועי "עונג שבת" באולם אוהל שם בתל אביב. א"וו בינדר ציטט את הלחן בשירו ביידיש שבת ביים שלוש-סעודות

According to Zemereshet: First printed in Idelsohn’s Sefer Hashirim (1922). He later marked it as Hasidic [not here but in Sefer Shirei Yisrael (1929; only later ed. extant)]. Evidence shows it was sung in Hasidic circles, esp. in Hungary, not always with these words. Adopted by both religious/secular youth, sung at “Oneg Shabbat” in Ohel Shem, Tel Aviv. A. W. Binder cited it in his Yid. song Shabes bam sholeshudes.

N. Cohn-Zentrer, in Ata Echad: From Hasidic Melody to Hebrew Song to Liturgical Tune, gives the version sung by Sh. Z. Rivlin’s “Shirat Yisrael” choir (ca.1910–50) to the words beseyfer khayim, brakha veshalom
